Professor Brenton Doecke
Role and Profile
Brenton Doecke’s research has involved a sustained focus on the professional learning and identity of teachers within a policy context shaped by standards-based reforms. This includes his work on the Standards for Teachers of English Language and Literacy in Australia (STELLA) and a follow-up project on portfolios for demonstrating professional knowledge, practice and engagement. The STELLA project has had a decisive impact on the development of professional standards in Australia, providing a basis for the standards developed by the Victoria Institute of Teaching, as well as a model for other subject associations (e.g. the Australian Foreign and Modern Language Teachers’ Association). Brenton co-authored the National Mapping of Teacher Professional Learning Project, a DEEWR commissioned project that investigated the policies and practices of teacher professional learning in Australia, including the work of several teacher education faculties across Australia.
